What is a switch?
A switch is a device for making multiple connections from one connection, without loss of speed. This way you can connect multiple devices to a switch.
Types of switches
There are different types of switches, such as managed and unmanaged. The difference lies in the presence of options for managing the network in the device. A managed switch is equipped with software that allows management to be arranged.
There are also PoE (Power over Ethernet) switches. This type of switch can add power to your internet cable, so that both data and power can run over one cable. The device to be connected must support PoE.
Number of ports
Switches are therefore available in different variants. The number of ports can also differ. There are switches with 5 ports, 8 ports, 16 ports and 24 ports.
Installing a switch
Installing a switch is very simple. It works according to the plug and play principle. One port is missing because it is used as an entrance to the internet. To connect a switch to a computer, a standard cable will be sufficient. To connect two switches, a crossover cable is required. Many switches themselves monitor which cable is connected, so this problem virtually no longer occurs.
