UTP cable 50 meters or an S/FTP or SF/UTP variant?

If you've decided to buy a 50-meter internet cable, you're not quite there yet. The next question is, which type of cable do you need? Here's what to consider:

  • For what applications will I use the network?
  • Is there a chance of interference from other radiation?
  • Does my cable run through pipes and how thick is that pipe?

What application will I use the network for?

A home network usually requires less capacity than a business network. But even at home, it's important to consider whether a single person or an entire household uses it. Also, consider whether many demanding applications are being used, or whether there are peak loads. Consider demanding home applications like online gaming, streaming movies or TV shows, or sending large files. Do you often work from home? Then you'll want to be able to make video calls without any issues.

Looking ahead, you'll see more and more devices connected to the network. Gaming and streaming services will also become increasingly high-quality. All of this places ever-increasing demands on the network. Therefore, proper cabling is crucial.

All these developments have made 50-meter Cat6 cables the standard today. This cable typically offers sufficient speed and bandwidth for a smoothly running home network, both now and in the coming years. However, be aware that the speed you can achieve also depends on the maximum speed your provider can offer.

Is there a chance of interference from other radiation?

Cables can be affected by interference from radiation. This causes them to transmit less data or become less stable. Radiation sources include other unshielded cables, but also LED equipment, for example. Want to prevent this? Then choose cables with shielding. These cables are designated with S, which stands for shielded, and F, which stands for foiled. This is how you get S/FTP cables.

Don't expect any interference? Then you can buy a 50-meter UTP cable. Not sure, or do you suspect interference might occur? Then choose an SF/UTP or S/FTP cable.

Does my cable run through pipes and how thick is that pipe?

A Cat5 and Cat6 cable have a diameter of 5.6 mm. A Cat7, and especially a Cat8 cable, have a larger diameter of 7.6 and 8.2 mm, respectively. If you want to run cables through empty conduit, keep this in mind.
